McCulley-Scammon Scholarship
(Prior Award Recipients)
A McCulley-Scammon Scholarship in the amount of $500 is available
annually to Peninsula residents meeting the following requirements:
- Applicants must be seniors at, or within three years after graduation, from due
date of application,
- Have graduated from an accredited high school located on the greater
Virginia Peninsula;
- Maintained a cumulative B average throughout the four years of
high school; and
- Have applied as a student to a college, university, or
professional school in an academic degree program in theatre, musical
theatre or dance. The Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Players
may accept alternative curricula which meet high professional
standards.
The application process is composed of two parts.
Part One
Applicants must submit the following by
May 15th of the year of
application:
- A completed application form.
- An essay of not more than 75 words describing the applicant's
interest in pursuing a career in theatre or dance;
- Two recommendations, one from a person with whom the applicant has
worked or studied, and one from anyone not a relative of the applicant;
- A transcript of the applicant's high school record - current
college students should also provide a college transcript;
- Current photograph;
- Playwrights should submit at least two examples of their work.
A review committee will evaluate all completed applications and select
those which merit further consideration.
Part Two
Applicants selected to proceed to the second phase of the selection
process will be notified to arrange for an audition and interview.
Actors and dancers should prepare two short, contrasting pieces to
perform. Applicants interested in technical aspects of theatre or dance
should bring examples of their work, which may include schematic
drawings and photographs of set designs, costume designs, lighting
plots, etc.
The scholarship may be awarded to the individual who, in the judgment
of the review committee and the Board of Directors of the Williamsburg
Players, has most fully satisfied the above requirements. The
scholarship recipient will be notified of his or her selection as soon
after the audition/interview as possible. The applicant is expected to
write a letter of acceptance within ten (10) days after being notified
of the award.
Payment and Renewal
The full amount of the scholarship will be paid after the recipient
provides a grade report showing successful completion of the first
semester or quarter of the school year. Successful completion requires
the maintenance of at least a B average in theatre and dance courses and
a C or above in all other subjects. If the recipient fails to complete
the first term successfully, or if he or she transfers to another major
field of study, the scholarship will be canceled.
The McCulley-Scammon Scholarship may be renewed yearly for an additional
three (3) years. Students seeking renewal must submit a formal request
to the Williamsburg Players Board of Directors, supplying evidence of
grade requirement compliance and continuance in an approved theatrical
field of study. This should be done each year after the fall semester
is completed and those grades are available.
All material submitted will become the property of the Williamsburg
