McCulley-Scammon Scholarship

(Prior Award Recipients)

A McCulley-Scammon Scholarship in the amount of $500 is available annually to Peninsula residents meeting the following requirements:

  1. Applicants must be seniors at, or within three years after graduation, from due date of application,
  2. Have graduated from an accredited high school located on the greater Virginia Peninsula;
  3. Maintained a cumulative B average throughout the four years of high school; and
  4. Have applied as a student to a college, university, or professional school in an academic degree program in theatre, musical theatre or dance. The Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Players may accept alternative curricula which meet high professional standards.
The application process is composed of two parts.

Part One

Applicants must submit the following by May 15th of the year of application:
  1. A completed application form.
  2. An essay of not more than 75 words describing the applicant's interest in pursuing a career in theatre or dance;
  3. Two recommendations, one from a person with whom the applicant has worked or studied, and one from anyone not a relative of the applicant;
  4. A transcript of the applicant's high school record - current college students should also provide a college transcript;
  5. Current photograph;
  6. Playwrights should submit at least two examples of their work.
A review committee will evaluate all completed applications and select those which merit further consideration.

Part Two

Applicants selected to proceed to the second phase of the selection process will be notified to arrange for an audition and interview. Actors and dancers should prepare two short, contrasting pieces to perform. Applicants interested in technical aspects of theatre or dance should bring examples of their work, which may include schematic drawings and photographs of set designs, costume designs, lighting plots, etc.

The scholarship may be awarded to the individual who, in the judgment of the review committee and the Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Players, has most fully satisfied the above requirements. The scholarship recipient will be notified of his or her selection as soon after the audition/interview as possible. The applicant is expected to write a letter of acceptance within ten (10) days after being notified of the award.

Payment and Renewal

The full amount of the scholarship will be paid after the recipient provides a grade report showing successful completion of the first semester or quarter of the school year. Successful completion requires the maintenance of at least a B average in theatre and dance courses and a C or above in all other subjects. If the recipient fails to complete the first term successfully, or if he or she transfers to another major field of study, the scholarship will be canceled.

The McCulley-Scammon Scholarship may be renewed yearly for an additional three (3) years. Students seeking renewal must submit a formal request to the Williamsburg Players Board of Directors, supplying evidence of grade requirement compliance and continuance in an approved theatrical field of study. This should be done each year after the fall semester is completed and those grades are available.

All material submitted will become the property of the Williamsburg Players. Questions about the application procedure should be directed to the Williamsburg Players at 757-229-0431.

Application material should be mailed on or before May 10th to:
